    Description

Custom mouthpiece made for the great Claudio Roditi by the craftsmen at Kanstul
In 1966 young Brazilian jazz trumpeter Claudio Roditi was named a finalist at the International Jazz Competition in Vienna. While in Austria Roditi met Art Farmer, one of his idols, and the friendship inspired the young trumpeter to pursue a career in jazz.
Roditi came to America in 1970 to study at the Berklee School of Music in Boston but just a few years later he moved to New York City, working with the likes of Herbie Mann and Charlie Rouse. Claudio later worked with Paquito D'Rivera, and was a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra. Roditi often performed on a rotary trumpet and flugelhorn. Roditi received a Grammy nomination for his fabulous album Brazillance X 4. Claudio collaborated with many artists, including trumpeter Chris Botti. Sadly, we lost Claudio to cancer last year at the age of 73. He was a jazz player's player.
Claudio spent a lot of time on the road, and was often in LA for a gig or to visit the Kanstul factory. On one occasion, Zig and I picked Claudio up from the airport and brought him to the factory for the afternoon. That evening, Zig suggested I take Claudio out for dinner and some music. There was a great jazz club just north of us in Fullerton called Steamers that had live jazz seven nights a week. We went midweek. We got there early and were eating while the band, a vocal combo, was setting up. The drummer and bass player came to our table and asked, "Excuse me, but aren't you Claudio Roditi?" It turned out he had worked with both of them in New York some years earlier. They asked him to sit in, but he politely declined.
Claudio's mouthpieces had cups with large diameters, up to 0.708 or larger. That puts them in the Schlke 22 neighborhood. Claudio preferred a mouthpiece suited for that open blow.
Some of Claudio's mouthpieces out there in the wild were made by Kanstul, but often modified by another well-known custom mouthpiece manufacturer, or by Claudio himself. Later, if the mouthpiece had been modified to the point he no longer liked it, Claudio would just get rid of it and start over with a fresh one. This elegant mouthpiece is a new, unmodified Claudio Roditi mouthpiece.
Kanstul Musical Instruments was a pioneer in single-point scanning and mouthpiece duplication. Before the factory was shuttered in 2019, players from around the world trusted Kanstul for their accuracy in duplicating the most valuable and unique mouthpieces, as well as extremely consistent production mouthpieces.
